Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are third molars that usually appear between the ages of 16 and 25 in the back of the mouth. These teeth most often do not resemble the growth patterns of other teeth and are very difficult to treat. As a result, it may be necessary to extract via surgery. Wisdom teeth should be removed only when they cause various problems (crowding of front teeth, pain at rash) and can not be treated. Some of the problems caused by wisdom teeth might include

  • Growing at an angle that is towards the next teeth

  • Growing at an angle that is towards the back of the mouth

  • Staying trapped within the jawbone

Problems with wisdom teeth

There is a list of problems that can occur with your impacted wisdom teeth:

  • You might feel extreme pain

  • Food debris might get trapped behind the teeth
  • Periodontal diseases might occur

  • Tooth decay

  • Damage to the teeth surrounding the impacted teeth or to the jawbone

  • Development of fluid-filled cyst around the impacted teeth

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Before removing a wisdom tooth, our dentist will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. A general anesthetic may be used especially if several or all of your wisdom teeth will be removed at the same time.

To remove the wisdom tooth, our dentist will open up the gum tissue over the tooth and take out any bone that is covering the tooth. He will separate the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone and then remove the tooth. Sometimes the dentist will cut the tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.

After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches. Some stitches dissolve over time and some have to be removed after a few days. Our dentist will tell you whether your stitches need to be removed.
